We’ve all been there. You find a pair of jeans that fits like a glove, making you feel incredible! Then, five minutes later, you are in another fitting room trying the same size, and they won't even go past your knees. They only fit when you go two sizes up.

Your entire mood shifts instantly. But did your body suddenly change in five minutes?

No, it stayed the same, but your body image took a hit anyway. The truth is that clothing size is less of a biological reality and more of a marketing choice decided in a corporate boardroom.

The Myth of Standard Sizing

Standard sizing charts were originally invented during the American Civil War for men’s military uniforms. When factories later tried to apply these rigid fashion industry standards to women in the 1940s, the government conducted a deeply flawed study. They only measured a small group of young, mostly white women, completely ignoring variations in weight, age, and diverse body shapes.

To make matters worse, modern brands constantly manipulate these numbers through vanity sizing, the practice of labelling larger physical garments with smaller size numbers to boost consumer confidence and sales. Because every brand creates its own arbitrary standard size chart to drive profit, relying on a label to define your self-love is like trying to anchor a ship to a moving cloud.

From Fitting In to Owning It


Many people measure their body’s ‘enoughness’ by the size they wear, but clothes should never be a test your body has to pass every morning! You shouldn’t shrink yourself to fit into a rigid garment; fashion should adapt to you. True self-love means shifting the narrative toward the freedom of living comfortably in your own skin.

When clothing digs into your skin, your brain receives constant signals of discomfort, trapping you in a cycle of body monitoring. The moment you switch to comfortable fashion and size-inclusive clothing, something incredible happens: you forget what you are wearing. Your mind is freed from that toxic inner critic, unlocking the mental energy needed for body acceptance. You can finally focus on your life, rather than checking how a waistband sits.

How to Unlearn the Pressure of Sizes

Something powerful you can do right this moment is cut the size tag off your clothes! Stepping away from the number allows us to focus entirely on the feeling, on how comfortable something feels, how beautifully it highlights your figure or how easily you can breathe in it.

Also, letting go of "aspirational" clothes is another transformative step. There is no reason to purchase a smaller size in the hope of eventually shrinking into it.

Clearing out the clothes that no longer fit makes space for items that actually honour the present. Holding on to them will only serve as a reminder of the past, and your body deserves to be celebrated exactly as it is today!
